How do we explain this unprecedented act of inhumanity?

I am beside myself -- horrified, stunned, devastated -- there are no words I can convey to express my horror over the hit and run that occured yesterday in Hartford Connecticut leaving an elderly 76 year old man, Mr. Torres lying on the ground with thousands of passerbys and people walking the streets, yet UNwilling to help.....How do we understand and explain this devastating manifestation of brutal apathy??
All I can say is WOW, WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE~~ I CAN'T EVER REMEMBER SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING IN MY LIFETIME..What has happened to human beings??We are falling far from loving...Where is the God in us??
How can thousands of people be so apathetic, so self centered, selfish, insensitive?

WEll, it is unconscionable, i cannot even fathom it..I spend some time right there in hartford, i cannot imagine the callousness of people in this generation….this IS A micrcosm of a larger segment of 'human' apathy. This is a frightening indicator of our disassociation from one another; a total identity crisis…who or what then are we identifying with, if not one another??? This is the mind boggling question that nags me…
i didnt hear the story, it is very sad, that poor family. The mind will never understand these things that the Heart knows.
There are many zombies driving out there. I try to look into the eyes of many drivers and only see fear driving those cars to get to something or someplace for an illusory happiness. oh and ad a cell phone to the equasion too :(
You know Michael, it wasn't only the murderer, the person who did the hit and run, that was already horrific, but – the man was lying in the middle of the street, take a look at the news,
cars simply drove past him, thousands of cars, and passersby on the streets!! Walking right past the man who was lying there…what the heck is going on here?? What's happened to people?? Why are we not identifying with pain and suffering…how can we be so callous?? Could you do that?? I could NOT>..
no i would not do that… I find myself packing bananas for the homeless i see throughout the day on the street corners. what has happened to people is the incridible marketing and news medium has dug them deeper into their thoughts. More lost… more in not even awake to see to help.
I am afraid the generation is driven by selfishness, self centeredness, entitlement, materialism, hedonism and sexuality…It is a sad commentary indeed.
When I see one person who has some consciousness or sensitivity to his own humanity and the humanity of others, it is refreshing indeed. When I see one person especially a secular one who is a 'mentsch' an embodiement of humanity, it is humbling, indeed and refreshing. WE have gone far, far astray…we are becoming more arrogant and obnoxious each day, limited to sexuality, thoughts of material wealth, and nothing more inside..
A nice, shiny cup that holds no water…..no substance, deluded by perversions..sad indeed.
I don't want to be here for the next generation….God knows what kind of chaos will reign in the world..
I see this empty shiney cup eventually losing its luster and wanting to be filled. I see many younger creative children supplying the change. Mostly one generation will overcome the shortcoming of the generation before them. I have three children that are following my peaceful footsteps and caring for their part of the world. and… I simply shine my best in my work and community and behavior will all I meet… why… because it feels good! and its alot easier.
Well, Michael, I am happy to hear that. You are probably the minority. Too many young people that i see are arrogant, harsh, tough, classless, have no composure, spoiled,
angry, entitled, shallow , rude, immoral…
Do you by any chance homeschool? I think those children that have been home schooled that i have seen are exceptional…Do your children have relgiious training, this too helps much..mostly what helps is the parents good example and lots of love, caring, and discipline. This is what most children are obviously not getting. That is a tragedy..
They are left to thier own devices, overlooked, spent little time with, never have home cooked meals on a daily basis, too much exposure to TV and computers, no supervision, or guidance.
God bless those children that do have parents who spend time with them and care for them properly. You must be part of those….

yes, Michael is very special… you know, Yaffie, there are beautiful people who are attracted to Gaia from all kinds of backgrounds, home schooled and not, religiously trained and not, loved well and not… but the commonality is an amazing openness to life…

thank you Nicole, I have only been here for 4 or 5 days, I had no idea WHAT to expect!! lolol..You never know what you will meet up with online~!!
But I have noticed that Michael is special, and I am looking to surround myself with those kinds of special people, I asked if he was one who might do that because that is an amazing thing and i was curious.
I have met some wonderful people here in my short 4 or 5 days, just like you!! ..

Nicole… thanks for the compliment… but special? far from it… I have chosen to be the canvas of the painting , the background in life, the space in dark and light. This required seeing things a little different and letting go. (it is teachable and does help)
as far as my kids… I dont go to church. Instead I will allow my life with my kids to be their prayer and meditation. I walk with them and ask them “hey stop and know that tree, its silence is you” or I used to take them to the woods and we would play games of who can hear the furthest sound, feel the slightest movement in the earth, smell the faintest smell and best of all see their head as the sky
Religion to me was too involved in stories and dreams of getting better in some other place. (yet I do visit a local church once in a while for friendship and good food) I prefer to simply teach my children that they are fine as they are… they dont have to wait to get to 6th grade or higher to be here a part of the world … they are now.
anyway lots of teachings from them to me and me to them… and who is the teacher. ?
I also send my kids to public school. I want them to learn how to interact with other children, deal with team work issues, and the challenges of life. For them this is the way. I feel this helps them learn about their emotions and energies of others and how to accept other people.
So… home school or religios upbrining may be for others and the other lesson I try to instill in my kids is to honor each place another is… is the spice of life.
Openess to life… is the way… becuase we are life.

I hear you and understand your ideas. Yes, you are both the teacher and the student! That is the amazing thing about relationships~!!
I want to add to you a thought.
Life is nothing if not influences, we are nothing if not influenced. However, if we are open to all of the influences of life without discernment and borders of disciplines of thought, we will indeed tinker with and involves ourselves in those influences, often not good….we will not know how to discern between the good and the bad influences ..
i know that backbone, good character, and refinement come from discernment, (never from being sloppy with beliefs or influences)…. good values, good ideas and thought come from our foundation, hopefully we have a blueprint of values and principles by which are our foundation to live by.
Acceptance needs to be regarded intially with discernment and untilmatley proven…motives need to be discerned as far as influence goes. If for instance we are accepting of everyone and everything, we become sloppy and careless and those bad inluences will certainly wreak havoc in our lives.
I am sure you know these things…
There is harmony in life when things are right between two powers: lovingkindness -ie, acceptance, expansion, leniency, overflowing, (these things alone are now balanced, they know no discernment, they just overflow continually and will eventually destroy) think about the ocean without a seawall or any borders–
and that of restriction- ie, border, contraction, barriers, discipline, stength……that too will destory, left to its own nature, it will kill everything in site left unattended…
we need both in balance and in good working operation without overages on either side.. balanced– otherwise we have no harmony, and in the end – no sweetness……if we are too sweet, too accepting, without discernment and borders, watch out!! The floods will come wash over us and drown us….from our own carelessness…this is a BIG problem in this generation….we don't like borders, we are out of balance, we are either too lenient or too harsh– if we are not educated with the grit that provides us with wisdom and maturity, balance, the generation is and will have crashes with right and wrong, maturity, moderation, etc.will walk blindly in the dark open to all of its forces.
The same applies for rigidity…
